The technology

Evogen General Effluent Improver and Evogen General Effluent Improver XL have been specially formulated to be used in aerobic wastewater treatment systems to boost the performance and improve effluent and sludge parameters.

How it works

The product utilises a specially designed organic carrier to trigger biofilm formation within the Bacillus. This helps the microbes retain themselves within a system by sticking to the carrier’s surface and using it as base for floc formation. The formation of these flocs, which typically have a Sludge Volume Index (SVI) of under 100, result in a compact sludge with excellent settling properties. This sludge formed by our Bacillus species is capable of harbouring a range of protozoan species including stalked ciliates.

The use of several Bacillus species which grow synergistically, provide a consortium that are not only metabolically diverse but capable of performing over a range of temperature and pH ranges.

With good growth rates under both high strength industrial type effluents and lower strength municipal wastewaters, Evogen General Effluent Improver gives the operator a versatile technology to tackle a multitude of scenarios.

From treating system shocks to improving system performance, the heterotrophic growth parameters of the Bacillus consortium are well suited for wastewater treatment across a range of effluent types.

Through enzyme profiling both in the laboratory and via genetic investigations, we have combined Bacillus strains capable of potent hydrolytic action. A diverse range of proteases, lipases, glycosidases and nucleases all combine to help manage sludge volume by breaking down some of its polymeric components. This combination of enzymes and diverse secondary metabolite profiles which produce compounds such as biosurfactants, further help to provide a sustained capacity to breakdown polymeric materials such as cellulose, FOG, proteins and DNA. Thus maintaining good effluent quality.

Directions for use

Evogen General Effluent Improver is supplied in a 20kg pack size and water-soluble sachets on request. Ideally, it should be added directly to the beginning of the aeration basin.

Evogen General Effluent Improver is provided as both a standard and XL version designed for larger plants. We recommend a target cell concentration of 1E+5 CFU/ ml is delivered via an initial dose followed by regular maintenance doses (we recommend you contact technical support before use to confirm best practice).

Where flows or system size make dosing a powder uneconomical, we recommend switching to our slow release Bioblock and Biobrick, which feature specialised floc forming microorganisms with diverse metabolic capabilities.

Considerations

Evogen General Effluent Improver should be used in systems dealing with organic rich wastewaters that contain proteins, carbohydrates and fats, oils, and grease such as municipal plants, bakeries, breweries, dairies and slaughterhouses.

Limitations

The product will perform poorly in highly alkaline (>pH 9) and highly acidic (40˚C) temperatures. Effluent types rich in phenolic and hydrocarbon species such as those from wineries, olive mills or heavy industry are not suitable for this product.

For specialised effluent types contact our technical department for alternative solutions and more information.

Safety

Via both cell cytotoxicity assays and genomic screens for toxin production, we can confirm that all Bacillus species and strains within the product are safe to use, should harbour no toxicity towards humans or animals and do not have a negative impact upon the environment.

From analysing the DNA of our strains we can confirm a lack of mobile genetic elements, which strongly indicates a low potential for transmission of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes.
